What is Traffic Calming? "Traffic Calming is the combination of mainly physical measures that reduce the negative effects of motor vehicle use, alter driver behavior, and improve conditions for non-motorized street users." (As defined by the Institute of Transportation Engineers.)
Traffic calming works to improve the quality of life in a community by reducing the speed and/or volume of traffic to levels that correspond to the class of the road and that are appropriate for the neighbouring activity.
